Episode 97 – Ara Gureghian and Dual Sport motocycles

Posted by on April 5, 2015

On this episode, I have the wonderful opportunity to chat with Ara Gureghian who has spent the last few years exploring the United States on his BMW GS dual sport motorcycle with sidecar carrying his dog, Spirit.  While the podcast is named The 4×4 Podcast, we talk about all things offroading.  Ara has a very inspiring story!  After chatting with him for a bit, I wanted to run out and buy a dual sport bike for myself, dump some responsibilities and just hit the road to explore!

Ara has also written a book which is a collection of posts from his blog that is really more of a letter to himself.  I have been following his blog for quite some time and I have really enjoyed his perspectives and insights.  I am truly looking forward to the opportunity to meet Ara in person on the trails somewhere.

From Derek

Hey Dan and Craig!  I thought I would drop a line to say hello after listening to all 95 episodes from the beginning.  I found your podcast at the end of last summer and have really enjoyed them.  Ive got to say your show has really opened my eyes to Overlanding.  Im a moderate camper but have never really thought to add it into off-roading that much.  Being married and with kids, it gets a bit overwhelming at times!  I live just outside Olympia, Washington and try to get out in the mud and woods when I can.  I have a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder that is slightly modified with a suspension and body lift, with 33in tires.  After listening to the last few episodes I have also subscribed to the NissanNation podcast.  Anyway, if you get a chance, come on over to to NissanPathfinders.net and check out the forum.

OUTDOOR EDIBLES

Thanks to Lodge Manufacturing for sponsoring The 4×4 Podcast Alaskan Expedition!  While down at their HQ, we picked up their new seasoned steel skillet.  Mrs. 4×4 Podcast put the skillet to work and make some sauteed okra.  I can tell you that it was delicious!  And the new skillet worked fantastic without any need to do additional seasoning.  To care for the skillet, you simply wash with hot water like you would with a traditional cast iron skillet.  This will be great to have at camp along the route up to Alaska.
