A new motor is the mechanical equivilent of a heart transplant but what is it called when you swap an old body onto a new everything else? This 62 Willys body has been grafted onto a Jeep LJ frame and drivetrain and from what I can tell its a great fit! In this package you’ll get classic styling with modern performance and reliability… and this is from the same skunkwerks guys that brought us the Mighty FC Jeep, the J-12, Apache and the rest of the Easter Jeep Safari concept rigs! What do you think?
Diesel motors when paired with a light vehicle will give you tons of fuel economy. When placed in a large truck you’ll get tons of power. What about when you drop a Power Stroke from a F350 into a slammed rat rod? Just watch the video and find out!
I’d heard so many great things about the Snow Peak Torch that I knew I had to pick one up for myself. It didn’t take any time to find out that the best deal on the market is from OverlandGourmet.com!
As an Eagle Scout, I pride myself in being able to start a fire in the rain without the use of a lighter. Part of me feels like using the torch is cheating, but when I fired it up and heard the roar of a fighter jet, all those thoughts of cheating went up in a puff of smoke.
The torch really should be classified as a flame thrower because, as you’ll see in the video, it blows 14,000 BTUs of charcoal starting, marshmallow roasting, blue flame fun! If you’re ready to plunk down the $40 price of admission to this camp fire starter jump over to OverlandGourmet.com and grab one of these hot deals for yourself! Be sure to tell them you heard about it on The 4×4 Podcast!
Everyone that was as the Easter Jeep Safari is heading back to civilization and all their videos are starting to show up across the Internet. Crawl Magazine is all about hard core rock crawling. I’ve spent my fair share of time on the rocks but I’m not sure that I’d consider myself a full on rock crawler. It sure looks like everyone had a great time out at this years event! See you there next year?

Back in episode 13 of the podcast I interviewed Clay Croft from xoverland.com. Back then he was still working on Episode 3 and ever since then, I’ve been anticipating the release. It has finally been released and IT IS AWESOME! I won’t spoil it for you so you’ll just have to watch for yourself. I actually plugged my computer into the TV so I could watch it in 50″ HD glory and it was amazing! Hey Clay, how much longer till episode 4 releases?!

The SOCAL Desert Rendezvous is an annual event and this year it took place on March 22nd and 23rd at a “secret location.” Actually, the location was disclosed through some navigation which added to the fun. I wish I could have made it to the event, but thats too far of a drive from Northern New York for me to travel for a weekend trip. I know at least a few of The 4×4 Podcast listeners made it out to the event as I’ve seen there pictures and videos and I’ve read their stories. Maybe someday I’ll be able to attend the event but till that happens, I’ll be living vicariously through the stories, pictures, and videos of my friends! What do you think of an event like this?

On this episode of the podcast we talk with Beau about his recent trip to New Zeland and everything involved in planning a trip like this. I met up with the guys of Team Xtreme in Watertown, NY at about 10 am on 7 April and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Team Xtreme has been active in Northern New York for 18 years. They describe themselves as a truck club rather than a Jeep club, but they welcome anyone who has a vehicle with 4WD, a good attitude, and a thirst for adventure.
The first vehicle I saw was a Ford Bronco on 39″ Super Swappers, King coilovers and the top removed to reveal a full roll cage. That’s when it hit me that I’m running with the big dogs today! Two-thirds of the group was full size trucks and Suburbans on 37″ and taller tires. About a quarter of the trucks had exhaust stacks billowing plumes of black smoke from their powerful diesel motors; needless to say, this was an impressive group.
After a brief drivers meeting and time to buy club stickers and tshirts we headed for the trail head. New York has lots of “seasonal access” roads. These roads are closed from 1 November – 1 May, usually. Since this area has had an unseasonably warm winter, the roads opened up to wheeled vehicle traffic on April 1st this year. Our parade of lifted vehicles made our way from the shopping center parking lot to an empty lot near the trail head and then we sorted ourselves out according to tire size. This was supposed to help keep things moving on the trails, but with a group of about 30 vehicles that ranged from stock JKs all the way up to a monstrous Super Duty, some trail traffic jams were sure to happen anyways.
My daughter can't wait to start driving, but she'll have to wait another 12 years
I situated myself near the front of the mid-sized vehicles and fell in line heading down the trail. Things quickly went from dry and dusty to twisted and muddy. The larger trucks had power and long wheel base working for them, but they weren’t allowed many choices for lines due to their full body size. Exhaust stacks were catching trees and trailer hitches and bumpers were getting dragged through the mud. Even most of the Wranglers were dragging their gas tanks through many of the ruts. All this on a regular road that just doesn’t get maintained!
I’m looking forward to discovering many more of these seasonal access roads and exploring the many state parks that New York has to offer and meeting many more great people! Be sure to check out the interactive map and video down below. If you know of a road or area that I should check out, be sure to leave a comment on this post, email me at the4x4podcast@yahoo.com, check out the show page on Facebook, or call the voicemail number 315-955-3467 or on Skype
WARNING – WATCHING TRUCK TRIALS ON YOUTUBE IS A TIME SUCK! BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, YOU’LL HAVE SPENT 30 MIN WITH YOUR MOUTH GAPPING OPEN IN AWE!
That being said, theres something about watching extremely large trucks with 8-wheel drive thats just cool. Watching them seemingly defy gravity and the laws of physics is a thing a beauty and this truck driver is a master…that or he’s just dang lucky! You decide!
